A couple weeks ago my wife and I finally went to see Avatar. I had been holding out for the DVD version because I already knew from the reviews and many trailers the basic story. And I am not a big fan of any movie that depicts mans goal to obliterate another species or ravage a culture just because they have natural resources that our money hungry nature must exploit.

But everyone said I had to see this movie on the big screen to really see Pandora in its spender.  So my wife and I decided to have a dinner and movie. Of course by now Avatar was relegated to one of the smaller theaters but still bigger then our 42” HDTV. We put on the 3D glasses and sat back for a thrill. As this was my first 3D movie I was skeptical but soon I was buried in the movie.

Yes I will say it was a good flick and worth watching at least one time in a theater with the whole 3D thing, but I don’t plan on making it a habit. Personally I did not like having to wear the glasses because it meant that I could not wear my own prescription pair. Having  a short depth of field on the screen meant I had to wear them or everything was really fuzzy and that did not appeal to me at all! The other thing was I did not see the blue creatures that are portrayed in all the still photo’s.

As movies go the story was predictable but as I said I tried not to pre-judge and to my delight the movie ended on a good note with man being shunned by this fictional species. That for me was the best part. To see man being forced back on their space ships not to return.

Personally I am sick and tired of the war hungry lets take it all attitude that has carried forward through out man’s existence on our own planet. There is already enough greed in this world without forcing on another, even if it was fictional.

I have never been what you would call a environmentalist but as I have become older and hope a little wiser I have come to realize that power and greed are the two primary factors that seem to always get in the middle of things. I see it daily around the world in various countries. It manifests its self in our government and quietly obscures the truth. It seams that the human race is destined to constantly forget the past and repeat history over and over like the movie Groundhog Day.

When is the human race going to wake up? When is the human race going to stop and realize they can’t just keep taking and taking. Yes I understand we need natural resources to survive but a what cost? The human race has to just stop this nature or it will not survive.

Yes the movie was worth watching. If not for the basic story then for the CGI special effects. Was it a game changer for the movie industry? I don’t think so. 2 of the top nominations for best picture this year at the Oscars are about destroying civilization and war. I hope whom ever wins that the films nominated were about the craft of movie making and acting. Not about seeing how much money could be made from stories that depict our human nature.

I will be watching and hoping but I will not hold my breath.
